چکیده

Waxes are a commonly encountered precipitate that can result in gelation of crude oils and cessation of flow in pipelines. In this work we develop a model wax-oil system that exhibits rheological behavior similar to waxy crude oils encountered in production scenarios. To study the consequences of gelation on the rheology of the model system we perform simultaneous measurements of the bulk flow behavior using rheometry and of the local shearing deformation using Particle Image Velocimetry. The bulk rheological measurements are correlated to deviations from the linear velocity profile anticipated for a homogenous sample undergoing simple shear this provides new insights into the structural and rheological evolution of these wax-oil systems under representative shearing conditions. The restart of flow and breakdown of the gelled wax-oil structure is observed under two scenarios a constant applied stress, and a constant applied strain rate. In addition, the effect of varying surface roughness on flow restart is investigated by comparing the temporal evolution ∗To whom correspondence should be addressed †Department of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge MA ‡Chevron Energy Technology Company, Houston TX

Nonlinear Rheology, Yielding, and Constitutive Modeling of Waxy Crude Oils

In this work, the rheological behavior of a group of model crude oils is experimentally studied at temperatures below their wax appearance temperature (WAT). We consider both a two-component wax-oil system and a three-component oil-water emulsion that is partially stabilized by precipitated wax. We characterize the shear-localization and yielding using a combined approach of bulk rheometry and ...

Measurement and Prediction of Time-independent and Time-dependent Rheological Behavior of Waxy Crude Oil

Wax deposition phenomenon changes the rheological behavior of waxy crude oil completely. In the current work, the rheological time-dependent and time-independent behaviors of waxy crude oil samples are studied and flow curve and compliance function are measured for the oil samples with various wax contents at different temperatures. A decrease in temperature and an increase in wax content lead ...

A Study of Flow Properties of Kuwaiti Crude Oil Obtained from Different Sources

The rheological properties of four different Kuwaiti crude oils in the presence of polyacrylamide (PAA) were investigated. PAA was varied at three different concentrations of 25, 50, and 75 ppm to study the viscoelastic properties in the untreated samples. Four different temperatures (25, 30, 35, and 40 °C) were used to evaluate different viscoelastic parameters of the treated and untreated Kuw...

A comprehensive constitutive law for waxy crude oil: a thixotropic yield stress fluid.

Guided by a series of discriminating rheometric tests, we develop a new constitutive model that can quantitatively predict the key rheological features of waxy crude oils. We first develop a series of model crude oils, which are characterized by a complex thixotropic and yielding behavior that strongly depends on the shear history of the sample. We then outline the development of an appropriate...

Method of Straight Lines for a Bingham Problem as a Model for the Flow of Waxy Crude Oils

In this work, we develop a method of straight lines for solving a Bingham problem that models the flow of waxy crude oils. The model describes the flow of mineral oils with a high content of paraffin at temperatures below the cloud point (i.e. the crystallization temperature of paraffin) and more specifically below the pour point at which the crystals aggregate themselves and the oil takes a je...
